Why buy sour mix when you have a glut of citrus. This is so good for making sours with whiskey, gin or amaretto. It even makes it good cordial, not so sweet but definitely to my liking.

It can be used as a substitute for any cocktail recipe that includes lemon/lime and sugar syrup. I haven’t yet tried it on my favourite cocktail, the French 75 but I definitely will be soon and it would be great in a margarita.

A sour mix is 2 parts alcohol (gin, whiskey, or gin) to 1 part sour mix, serve in a rocks or whiskey glass with a couple of large ice cubes.

This recipe fits nicely into a clean wine bottle, this picture was taken after a few test drinks.

SOUR MIX RECIPE

Ingredients

  • 4 lemons and 10 limes, zest and juice (or any combination to give 4 cups juice)
  • 4 cups of citrus juice (see above)
  • 3 cups sugar
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 cup water

Method

  1. Peel the zest from the citrus with a potato peeler. Try not to get much of the pith (white part) as this can be sour.
  2. Place the zesty peels in a saucepan with the sugar, salt and water and heat over medium heat or until mixture is syrupy and all the sugar is dissolved (for about five minutes).
  3. Set the pan aside to cool for about 10 minutes while juicing the citrus.
  4. Put a strainer over a jug and pour in the syrup and juice, straining off the zest and seeds, then return to the pan and bring to a simmer.
  5. When cool and decant into a very clean bottle.
